Hello and Welcome to the DeviantART art community. If you are reading this then I assume that you are a new member to DeviantART. The aim of this Journal is to introduce you to DeviantART, explain how it works, teach you good habits, give you some tips so that your stay at DeviantART will be fun and exciting, also hopefully you will also learn new skills and artistic techniques. I am first going to explain a little about what DeviantART is, and also what it isn't, as this is useful information for everyone, not just New Members to bare in mind.
DeviantART Is:A place for you to share your art and get or give feedback on yours and other peoples art.
A community, where you can share art or just view other peoples art.
A great place to make friends and meet fellow artists.
Full of some of the greatest Artists in the whole art community.
A place to improve your skill and technique in your chosen art.
A place where you can expand your artistic skills into other areas.
A place where great artists can get exposure and publicity that they need
A fun community to be a member of!
DeviantART Isn't:A image hosting site for your benefit.
To be used if you don't take pride in your work, and you are not willing to learn.
A place to flame other members or make enemies.
A place where you can flame other users if they are worse at art than you.
The official line from the FAQ is as follows:
"deviantART is an online art community for artists and art lovers to interact in a variety of ways, ranging from the submission of art to conversations on a number of topics. In its purest form, deviantART is a means for expressing ones-self in a variety of ways."First Steps....Now that you know a little more and you know that DeviantART is the right site for you lets get started with your DeviantART account. Here is a list of things that it helps to do first, before anything else with your DeviantART account (the order should be kept pretty well the same, but there is some room for changing the order):
Read the DeviantART RulesFirst things first, you are going to have to thoroughly read the rules at one time or another and when you have just joined is as good-a time as any. Follow this link and make sure you know the specific does and don'ts of DeviantART, once you are completely sure that you know the rules, you can move on to the next steps.
DeviantART Submission PolicyDeviantART EtiquetteShoutBox Rulesdxd's Forum DescriptionsUpload an AvaterAn avatar is a small 50*50 image that is one of the main ways that people use to identify you. It works in much the same way as an avatar in many forums. The image can be of anything as long as the content is allowed on DeviantART, but it helps to remember that everyone will see your avatar and that for most people it is their main way of identifying you. An avatar is not essential but if you want to use DeviantART seriously it is advised that you get one, because some people will see the default avatar and use this to make a judgement about you that you are new, and this may cause them to treat you differently.
To give yourself an avatar, got Settings and then got the bottom right hand corner and you will see a heading labelled avatar, click browse to upload a file from your computer, but first make sure that it is a 50*50 image and that the file size is less than 15Kb. You can have animated avatars, provided then are the right pixel and file size.
Enter your Userpage InfoYour Userpage is your personal page within the DeviantART page and if people would like to look at your art or just see what you are like then your Userpage is the first place that they will go. A Deviants Userpage can be accessed by clicking on a link in their name, e.g.
HipHopPromotor or by typing in the correct URL, always of the format:
#.deviantart.com where # is the deviants username
Your Userpage will show almost everything about you, it will show your latest Deviation, have links to your most recent Deviations, it will show your Favourites and your recent Favourites will be linked, it will show your statistics, it will show your Devious Desktop (if you have one), it will show your DevID (if you have one), it will show your latest Userpage comments, from you and other Deviants, it will show your latest Journals entry and it will also show you Devious Information
Your Devious Information is basically information about yourself that is displayed on your Userpage. It is recommended that you fill in your Devious Information so that people visiting your Userpage will be able to read information about you. The Devious Information categories are pre-defined and you just fill in the relevant information about yourself for each category. To add your Devious Information, go to Settings > then Userpage. Then on the right you will see various questions or statements with blank textboxes next to them. Fill in your answers in the textboxes. The categories vary from Age: and Location: to Favourite Quote: and Favourite Artist. Fill in as many of the categories as you feel you want to. You do not have to fill in an answer for every category, and many people only fill in a few of the answers. Now that you have filled in the information, scroll down to the bottom and click Submit and your Devious Information will be updated. Now you can got your Userpage and check that it has worked correctly. Note there is a restriction to the number of characters you can post in each of the categories, so you may need to go back and edit your answers if you wrote too much.
Sort out your account settingsYour account settings are very important, because they define what things like your password is and also what your email address is. To change your account settings you need to click the link to settings at the top of the page, then on the page that loads you will be able to change your account settings. Check that all the information is correct and also if you need to change your password you can do that from this page. You may already have seen this page and changed some information, but it is useful to review it all and check it thoroughly.
Write a Journal EntryYour Journal is the place that you can write anything, this guide is a Journal entry, however most Journal Entries are simply a dairy that other Deviants can read to get to know the Deviant who wrote the comment. Basically anything as long as it is within the broader site rules can go in your Journal, for most people it is just the place where they write the latest news.
As a new Deviant I recommend that your first Journal entry can be used to introduce yourself to DeviantART to any Deviants that happen by your Userpage, some things that you might want to add to your first Journal are:
Some more information about yourself, other than that on your Devious Information.
Write a bit about art, what art your like, what art you plan on submitting to DeviantART.
Explain your reasons for joining DeviantART.
To add a new Journal or edit or delete a previous one, all you need to do it click on the Journal link at the top of the page (by Settings and Notes) and you can do it all from that page.
Upload a DevIDA DeviantID (DevID) is a large image that goes on your Userpage, above your Devious Information. DeviousID's can contain anything, as long as the content sticks to the basic rules and policies of DeviantART. The typical size for a DeviantID is a portrait image, about 650*400 pixels, it can be bigger, but if it is too wide the a lot of it will be missed off your Userpage. To get an idea for what DevID's look like you can go on other Deviants page and see what theirs are like, or you can got the
DevID section of browse.
Get yourself a signatureA signature is a bit of text that appears below every comment that you make on DeviantART, it is only small and you can put anything you want into it, try to limit yourself to about 4 lines, 5 lines maximum. What you put in it is COMPLETELY up to you. Have a look around DeviantART generally to see what other people have put, and if you still cannot think of something to put in it then you just put a humble link to your gallery, copying and pasting the URL from your browse and into signature. The maximum number of characters in your signature is 255 characters, this includes hidden code. Then later you can add something original to it
To edit your signature, got Settings > then Browsing and Comments and in the signature section type what you want your signature to say, or paste some links into it. It helps if you set your signature to sticky so that it shows up all the time, then click submit and make a test post on your Userpage to check it has worked.
Enter your geographic coordinatesAlso on your accounts setting page is a section where you can add your geographical coordinates in the world, if you follow the instructions in that section then you will be able to add your geographical coordinates. How you can click on the "Neighbours" link from your Userpage and a list of nearby Deviants will be listed, in order of their proximity to you. Also people will now be able to see you on their Neighbours list if they are close enough to you. The Neighbours link is very useful because you can find out about Deviants who live near to you, and it is a great opportunity to get to know them.
Add your Devious DesktopThis is not essential, but some Deviants might want to see a picture of your desktop. To get a picture of your Desktop, close or drop all the applications that you are running and then press the Print Scrn (Print Screen) button. Now open up an image editing program, any will do and paste the image. Now that it is pasted save it with an appropriate name and then upload it to DeviantART, the correct category to upload it too is the " DeviantART Related > Deviant Desktop " section. Then got your Settings > Userpage section and there is an option to choose a Devious Desktop to be displayed on your Userpage, using the drop down menu select the image that you just uploaded.
Start Submitting your artYou have now done all the basic things and sorted out your Userpage and all the settings of your account. You can how submit art to DeviantART, nothing more needs to be said about this other than you will need to make sure that the art you submit is in the correct category, when you are submitting read the category and sub-category descriptions carefully and you should be ok.
Enjoy Submitting your art and good luck to you
The Next StepNow you have completed the first step and got all the basics nailed down, its time to move on to the next step, these steps are none art related guidance, so bare in mind that from now on you should be working on submitting your art for others to see, this guide doesn't cover art as I assume it is a skill that you already know and also it would be very difficult to write about every single type of art or style of art in this Journal.
Take a Detailed Read through the FAQThe FAQ is one of the most useful resources/help files on all of DeviantART, browsing through can teach you lots about DeviantART and how it works, it can also teach you advanced things such as posting thumbnails to your art. It is advised that you take time to read through the FAQ so that you don't have to ask other Deviants stupid questions (which may annoy them) and also so that you can use some of the a-for mentioned advanced features, which will show other members that you know your stuff.
Make a forum thread in the welcome centreNow that you have started your account, sorted out your Userpage and done all that stuff, maybe even submitted some art as well, its probably about time you formally introduced yourself to the DeviantART community. The best way to do this is to make a thread in the Welcome Centre board of the DeviantART Forums, so head over to the forums and open up the Welcome Centre board and scroll down to the bottom to start a new topic welcoming yourself. In your topic you can say whatever you like, as long as it doesn't break the DeviantART rules, but remember that people will be reading it and this topic will most likely be the first impression that people get of you so try to think about what you are going to say, some things that you might like to say are:
Say a little bit about yourself as a person
Say a bit about why you joined DeviantART
Say a bit about what art you plan on submitting
Say a little bit about your hobbies outside DeviantART
Perhaps you could discuss art, why you enjoy it and how long you have been a fan of art
Start Getting Used to the EmoticonsEven though they are not essential, and some people would go so far as to say they are a gimmick, they are useful for conveying your mood and also make your posts more interesting. Also if you are proficient it the use of the emoticons then other members will get the feeling that you know what you are doing and that you know your stuff. When you are posting try to use a variety of emoticons and try to make them appropriate. See the emoticon legend when posting, which can be found just to the bottom left of the comment box, or here:
Emoticon Legend.
Start using some of DeviantART's more advanced featuresDeviantART has lots of advanced features such as direct linking to other users Userpage, posting their avatar as a link to their page, posting image thumbnails. These don't just look professional, but they are also very functional. The best ways to learn them is to read the applicable FAQ topics. Here are some that you may find very useful, have a look around the FAQ yourself though, and I am sure you will find more:
FAQ #81: How can I create links to other deviants, deviations, or websites?FAQ #14: How do I create a link to a specific comment?:faq254:
:faq80:
FAQ #32: Fair Use and Your SubmissionNow you are pretty well ready to start commenting, submitting and generally enjoying DeviantART, however there are some other useful articles that you should read, most of them on commenting well, in a way that helps other Deviants to improve, but also will not offend them.
How to give better CommentsSplat's Comment Revolution Part 1Splat's Comment Revolution Part 2Getting and Giving HelpThe Art of CommentingGuide to CommentingIf you plan on becoming and professional artist with a DeviantART Prints account then this News article is very useful as well.
Looking More ProfessionalThere are no articles on improving your art and that is because this a skill that you must learn yourself, by commenting and listening to others comments, and also it is too board-a subject to explain/instruct in a Journal entry. The tutorials on DeviantART can be useful though:
DeviantART TutorialsImportant Section: Ways to avoid annoying other DeviantsIt is important to try to get along with your fellow Deviants, you don't need me to tell you that, but this section will tell you ways to avoid annoying other members, bare in mind there may be nothing wrong with you, but one action that the other Deviant is getting very tired and annoyed with, from you can annoy that Deviant a lot. Here are the best ways to keep active on DeviantART, but not annoy other Deviants:
Be HumbleWhen you post your art do not post stuff like "this is the best piece of art you will ever see" etc, because that is just asking for trouble. If it is good then let other members tell you that
. Also bear in mind that DeviantART has some of the best artists in their fields so the chances are there is always someone better than you, its just the truth, however hard it is too take.
Stick to the rulesMake sure that you don't break the rules, it may seem simple, but make sure that you are familiar with the rules. Especially in the forum where there are only certain places where you can post certain topics. These links will help you stick to the rules:
DeviantART Submission PolicyDeviantART EtiquetteShoutBox Rulesdxd's Forum DescriptionsMake sure that you have put effort into your artA lot of people find it very annoying if you submit art that has obviously had no-effort put into to it, no artist is so good that they don't need to try, so if you put effort into your art it will come out better and other Deviants are less likely to be annoyed buy it and call you a Spammer or a n00b, so put in the effort to avoid this. Its also common-sense as well.
Don't ask other members stupid questionsTry to avoid asking Questions such as "Will you watch me" or "Will you be my friend"... etc, because some members will read these and think that you are stupid, or the only reason that you joined DeviantART was to see how many pageviews you can get, a lot of members will very badly of you if they get the impression that you have this attitude, remember DeviantART is primarily an art site.
Also stupid Questions about the working of DeviantART are annoying to a lot of Deviants because they just waste time, and to them it is obvious that you have never read the FAQ and don't plan, if you have a question to ask then check the FAQ first and fore-most.
Don't FlameOkay perhaps a little obvious, but if their is a Deviant that you feel you do not get along with or annoys you, try not to flame them, because it doesn't really achieve anything and they are likely to flame you back, which will mean that the whole thing will escalate downwards. If you have a grievance with another Deviant then in some case you can report them to the admins or you can just ignore them and don't bother viewing their art or their Userpage, that way flaming will be unnecessary.
Take into account what other members have to sayOk this is a pretty simple one, and fairly self explanatory, it can apply to wide variety of situations, for example someone's opinion in the forums, but it can equally apply to advise that people give you on your art, if they suggest a way that you could improve your art then if you can it would be nice to act upon it, especially if more than one person suggest the same thing.
Ways to get recognisedSo you have started submitting your art to DeviantART and your Userpage is fine, you now want to start meeting and chatting to other Deviants; basically you want to start getting recognised. I will now explain some different ways to do this, these are not guaranteed but they will certainly help, most of these methods can be easily employed to benefit yourself and be recognised by other artists.
Show your Art off in the Thumbnail ForumsThe
Thumbshare Forums is a special forum where you can post thumbnails of your Deviations for other Deviants to see. To see how to post your forums then read the FAQ linked below. The advantages of the Thumbshare forum are that you can post thumbnails of your best pieces for other Deviants to see and if they like the look of the thumbnail then they will click on it and view the full deviation, this is great because it can be used to show off your art to a wide audience. However the usefulness of the forum is reduced because a lot of the topics are topics such as "lets trade comments" or "I will comment on your work if you comment on mine" etc. These are not really useful because the person in question will *usually* comment on anything you want, even if they do not know very much about the art form in question. Just something to bear in mind
Go on the ShoutBoxThe ShoutBox is a great place to get to know lots of other Deviants, you can chat to lots of people at the same time, about anything and it is great for making friends. However the ShoutBox has its own additional rules and beware that there will be a moderator of some sort watching what you say most of the time. Here is the link to the ShoutBox and also to its rules:
Pop-Up ShoutBoxShoutBox RulesGo on the DeviantART IRC ChannelThis is basically a chatroom for DeviantART and like a Deluxe chatroom with the same benefits as the ShoutBox. Check out this FAQ entry for more information:
FAQ #161: I've submitted over X amount of deviations to a single category, but I am not presented with the option to submit to a frequently used category. Why is this?Regularly Check the ForumsThere is always lots happening on the forums so and its a great place to chat about almost anything. Depending on what you enjoy other than art there are loads of other forums within the main DeviantART Forum, from Music, Games to Software and WindowsXP forums. Chatting about your hobbies with other Deviants is another ways to be recognised and to get to know new Deviants. You can also help people on the forums by answering their questions which as well as giving back to the community will also help to get you recognised. Here is the link to the DeviantART forums, as well as dxd's forum descriptions, which you should read so that you know what you can post in each of the different forums:
DeviantART Forumdxd's Forum DescriptionsComment on other Deviants workWhen commenting on other Deviants work it is important that your comments are useful and thoughtful, otherwise they are no use to anyone, I have already posted links to several Journals which go into to detail about giving good, useful comments so I will not repeat them, but if you are not posting useful comments then to be brutally honest there is not much point in commenting at all, but its ok because with all the Journals you have read your comments will be good
. Posting useful comments is going to get you recognised because the Deviant whose art you comment on is likely to be glad of useful comments and consistently posting useful comments will be noticed and so you will get recognition. Some Deviants will also return to favour if you comment on their work by comment on some of yours.
Try to give something back to the communityGiving something back to the community is not only rewarding and a great way to "thank" DeviantART, but it will also help get you respect from other Deviants, especially those who have been around for a long time. There are many ways that you can give something back to DeviantART, writing long articles like this to help other Deviants is one way, as is posting News and helping people in the Forum, for a really good run down of different ways to give to the community, read this full run down of the different roles you could take, there is bound to be something there that you would like to do:
Devious BehavioursJoin ClubsJoining clubs is a great way to meet like-minded Deviants, and a common hobby/love/location etc is a great way to get to know other Deviants, once you know them they are going to start giving you recognition. If you cannot find any clubs then check out these "indexes" of most of the clubs on DeviantART:
Clubs-ClubCommunitiesDeviantART GroupsDeviantGroups Glossary.. of sortsThis section explains lots of key words and terms that you may come across but wonder what they mean, and it helps to fill in any gaps of knowledge that you might have.
ClubsClubs are ways that Deviants with a common interest can get together and either post art to do with that interest or just be a member and chat about their interest. Clubs are usually just a DeviantART account with a suitable name a suitable settings, started by a few Deviants. The Journal entry of the club will usually explain about it, what you need to do to join and much more.
Notes SystemThe notes system is DeviantART's very own private messaging system that can be used between any two Deviants. Simply click on notes on the top of your page and then choose a Deviant to send the note to, a subject and then write then note, it will immediately appear in the recipients Inbox section in their Notes and they will be able to read it and reply.
NewsThe news pages are filled with the latest news submitting by various Deviants, anyone can submit a news item, here are the links to the different aspects of the DeviantART News Section, the latest news is part of the DeviantART main page:
Submit NewsLatest NewsAll NewsFeatured DeviationYour featured Deviation is a Deviation that you wish to draw your Userpage page viewers' attention to, the Deviation will always show as an image on your Userpage under the Featured Deviation section. To assign your Featured Deviation all you need to do is to got your Settings > Userpage and then on that page their is the option to choose your Featured Deviation.
Daily DeviationThe Daily Deviation is a Deviation that is worthy of such merit that it is assigned Daily Deviation status, this basically means that it is the best Deviation in its category of the day. Daily Deviations are chosen by administrators and moderators and it is entirely their decision which Deviation is assigned Daily Deviation status. If you know who the appropriate moderator is then you can note him and give a recommendation, but the decision is in their hands.
AdminsThe Admins are the people who do all the running of DeviantART behind the scenes, they keep the site running smoothly, so respect them
They also have the power to do lots of things, such as ban Deviants and more.
Reply, Parent and TopClicking the reply button below a persons comment will allow you to reply directly to them, your comment will be slightly indented and the person will get a message telling them that you have replied. If you are having a conversation by clicking on the reply button, then two other buttons my appear; Parent and Top. Clicking Parent will allow you to see the comment before that comment, and you will be able to see what the person was replying to. Clicking Top will allow you to go to the very start of the discussion thread or comment listing, and see all the comments.
FAQ #41: What do the "Parent", "Top" and "Reply" links under comments mean?PrintsDeviantART prints, is a services that lets artists set-up and then manage their own prints account. This account allows them to sell some of their Deviations as arts prints, this will help artists to gain recognition for their art and also make some money as well. The price of the prints is set by the artist and their are a large variety of print sizes and specifications available. To set up a DeviantART prints account you need to buy one.
FAQ #179: What is DeviantArt Prints?:faq206:
MessagesThe Messages system on DeviantART is a way of notifying you when something occurs, for example if one of your Friends submits a new Deviation, you will get a message tell you think and with a link to it, you also get messages about Forum Replies, Notes Received, Friends Journals, Friends Journal Polls, Comments, Friends Deviation, When Someone watches you and when someone adds on of your pieces to their favourites.
